In many ways this seems like a collection of nonsense which has been gathered together and published, but there is more to Time Sheets: A Collection of Poems by Stephen R. Wagner than meets the eye. The book begins in winter and slowly transforms from winter to spring, spring to summer, summer to fall, and then back to winter again. Mixed within the verses of nature and time changing is the use of the words “time sheets,” cleverly placed as a portion of nature. Time sheets are peeling off of the garage, for instance, or snow that is like the backside of a time sheet flipped over to show the blank side. Though the original use of these poems was a clever way for the author to remind his coworkers to turn in their time sheets, the reflections take on a whole new meaning when they are combined together.
What is likely a beautiful accident, Time Sheets: A Collection of Poems is in all actuality a very deep and meaningful collection of poems that mark not only the passing of the seasons, but the depth and importance of life when related to punching the clock. Stephen R. Wagner most likely never gave a great deal of thought to how his thoughts progressed throughout the period of time that is covered by this collection, but he has brilliantly constructed a message about the futility of our labors and the beauty which passes before us while we are hurrying to and fro. Profound, humorous at times, and thought provoking, Time Sheets: A Collection of Poems is a delightful accident with deep meaning that will continue to penetrate your thoughts long after you’ve finished reading your time sheet.
