Tilly goes shopping with her mother in the story Tilly Tore Her Trousers by Christel Ceraline. Tilly sees some lovely trousers and shorts in the window. Her mother asks her which one Tilly wants to buy. Tilly likes the shorts, but this does not fit her. So she buys the trousers instead. She really likes them and she can wear them on any occasion. One day when she is watering the garden, her trousers get entangled and torn by a rose bush. Tilly is scared to tell her mother and the rest of the day she stays away from her mother. Finally Tilly tearfully tells her mother, who takes a needle and thread and turns Tilly’s torn trousers into shorts.
The story conveys a good message that there is always a brighter side to life. The illustrations in the book make it colorful, lively, and appealing to young readers. Tilly’s character and her dilemma are relatable and can be understood by many. The story is cute and is perfect as a bedtime storybook, and children can be made to understand how every misfortune has a bright side to it with the help of Tilly’s story. The story is good for read aloud sessions in classrooms too as it encourages children to look on the bright side of life. Stories like this are motivating and uplifting to readers because of their positive messages. It is refreshing to see how Tilly’s mother puts the smile back on her daughter’s face.
