Three Husbands and a Thousand Boyfriends by Patricia L. Brooks spoke to me. In this book, Brooks tells about her many relationships and marriages. She talks about being abused, suffering PTSD, and finally being able to overcome it. This book is an emotional read, but is for anyone who has ever lost their sense of self in a relationship. Brooks has lead an interesting life. I have never heard of a love addiction before, but after reading about it in Three Husbands and a Thousand Boyfriends, things make more sense in life. Brooks married twice at a young age. She was always searching for that high feeling of being in love. She needed to feel accepted and wanted. Her first marriage was an escape from an unsatisfying home life. Her second marriage is where she lost her identity. Her husband was the sole decision maker on everything. Her opinion was not needed nor wanted. This is the part where I felt connected to Brooks the most.

Brooks goes on to talk about her abusive relationship which almost ended her life. The majority of the book is about her recovery and learning to overcome her PTSD. Reading her words about her abuse, you can tell she is still healing. It was obviously a very painful time in her life. It is hard not to hate her enemy and root for her recovery. Her chapter on grief also spoke to me. I wish more people would understand that everyone grieves in their own way There is no set time to get over the death of a loved one. I can see this book helping a lot of people. It made me see a new point of view in my own life. I will always be grateful to Brooks for this. I highly recommend reading it if you have ever been in a controlling relationship.
