Every war brings tragedy, death, and a new path forward through history, but it seems that some wars are more fateful, more important, and more decisive than others. None of the ancient wars I have read about seem as bitter or hard fought as the wars between Rome and Carthage. These two nations were fierce rivals until the very end. I have read several novels based on the history of conflict between these two great nations, but Threads of an Empire by Simon Rudman is unique. Most of the novels I have read come at the conflict from the perspective of Rome. In Threads of an Empire, Simon Rudman shows the Carthaginian side in more detail than I have ever seen it. This shines a new light on the subject and I was able to look at the conflict from new angles.
This is war, so the characters' emotions are intense. There are a lot of fascinating characters here. Some are historical and some are totally from the world of fantasy. Simon Rudman does a great job of taking aspects of history and fantasy, then combining them into elements perfect for telling this particular story. The writing is good. The plot is compelling and original. There are a lot of things to like and admire about Threads of an Empire, but the thing that stood out above the rest for me was the relationship between Hamilcar and Hannibal. This has got to be one of the most talented father/son duos in the annals of military history. Simon Rudman does a great job of creating a relationship that explains this talent and the drive that fuels it.
