Theseus by Dr Simon Spence chronicles the life of Theseus, son of King Aegeus. The story is derived from Greek mythology. King Aegeus departs and heads for his home in Athens, but leaves his son behind, along with a sword and a pair of sandals. He places the items under a rock. When Theseus grows into a strong young man, he retrieves the items and heads for Athens to be reunited with his father. Along the way, he has to constantly fight for his life as the path is filled with danger. From fighting a dangerous club-bearer to overcoming Skiron, a cruel and cunning man, Theseus is exposed to the worst that can befall a man. Finally, Theseus arrives in Athens and is received with jubilation by his father, but the worst is yet to come. Theseus takes up the responsibility of freeing his city from a curse, but his new responsibility comes with consequences.

Theseus is an educational book, written with a masterly touch for young readers who are curious to learn about Greek mythology. The story inculcates themes of bravery and determination, which are important life lessons that any child should learn early enough, and makes the book a must-read. In addition, the book contains gripping action and adventures that are bound to interest any young reader. It is interesting, well-written, and contains engaging illustrations that gripped my attention and aided me in consistently following the story line. At the end of the book, Theseus contains additional notes that are informative to adults as well. I got to learn a few facts about Greek folklore, even though the book is mainly written for a younger audience, which makes the book a great read for all.
