When you hear the word ‘them,’ what does it resonate to you? For some, the word ‘them’ creates intense and negative feelings while for others this can generate a warm and fuzzy feeling. THEM: The Richer Life Found in Caring for Others by John Certalic unfolds a true account of how John Certalic went on a journey of self-discovery to create a more centered life, beginning with forgiveness. It began when, as a child, he was tired of practicing his accordion lessons. Instead of support, his mother created an uncomfortable encounter by informing him that he should be practicing and be grateful for the accordion because his father, who wasn't his biological father, bought it for him. And to add fuel to the fire, he was the product of a one-night stand that never provided any type of support, physically or monetary. What? Is that the type of response you give to a child that's reaching out for your support? Well, this response sparked something in John Certalic that began his journey into finding about his father and his past.
This book was interesting for me because the title displays power in the word THEM. As we begin to think about ‘them,’ we must understand that we all have a story and a past. When the word ‘them’ crosses your mind, does it elicit depression, forgiveness or put a smile on your face? Your response determines where you are in your healing process. If you feel wounded, then begin the path to achieving a better context of your emotions and begin with self and healing. This book is inspirational because it shows that your healing will help to display an outlet of caring, and help others to do the same. As a resource to assist you on your own journey, John Certalic has provided a free study guide to be used individually or in a group setting.
