The Wish Twister is a fantasy book for children and young adults written by Devi Anderson Anton. Finn has just celebrated his 11th birthday and can’t wait to get home from school to check out his new Xbox game, Haunted Holmes. He’s good at school stuff, but has to be careful not to seem too much like a know-it-all in class as that will make him a target for bullies. Finn’s real passion is detecting and his future as a great detective fuels him on. When he finally gets home from school, he’s ready to break open Haunted Holmes, but his mom suggests he open the birthday card that’s waiting for him first. It’s from his Uncle Snorri, an eccentric magician and artist, and Finn’s favorite relative. The card’s illustration shows a strange land where trees and stone houses seem oddly twisted. Finn’s startled to see an eye appear on the cover of the card and an urgent appeal for help.
Devi Anderson Anton’s preteen and young adult fantasy, The Wish Twister, is a wildly creative adventure that’s vaguely reminiscent of Alice’s adventures. Finn has much more control, however, in this fantasy than Alice does. He gets to shoulder an awesome amount of responsibility as the fate of the universe rests on his shoulders, and a budding detective couldn’t ask for a better first case or a more resourceful and entertaining cast of companions. The Wish Twister is filled with magical images and colorful chaos as Finn tries to find and stop the thief who’s creating a cascading chaos that seems unstoppable and overwhelming. The Wish Twister is so much fun! It’s a mystery that begs to be solved by the reader as well as Finn, and the clues are all there waiting for you to do just that. I loved The Wish Twister and am looking forward to solving more cases with Finn.
