Scott Alexander Young’s The Wild Cats of Piran chronicles the adventures of Felicia, an Oriental Shorthair cat who was born in Naples. It is also the story of Dragan, a Chartreux cat from Slovenia, as well as Beyza, Leopold, and the other wild cats that make up the feral colony living in the picturesque city of Piran in Slovenia. In this historic place off the Adriatic coast, Felicia ends her travels and settles down to join a wild cat colony. She has been to most parts of the world and has lead an interesting and adventurous life, but now already on her last and ninth life, Felicia becomes the Queen of Piran’s wild cats. Haunted by the city’s ghosts, constantly chased by a cruel maitre d’ and an errant teenager, and in danger of being domesticated, life in Piran is not boring ... but it becomes quite dangerous when General Rat tries to wipe them out of the place they call home.
The Wild Cats of Piran is the first part in what promises to be a series of nine engaging stories about the famed wild cats of the historic city of Piran. This 136-page book is peppered with delightful illustrations from Moreno Chiste and this makes the characters leap out of its magical pages. Scott Alexander Young’s imagination knows no bounds and, as he creates Piran’s cats' world, he also informs and imparts a number of moral lessons.
It is refreshing to see the world from the point of view of Felicia, a cat who was born in a palace in Naples in 1721 and is now living and thriving in the 21st century. Piran, with its old town hall, cobbled stone roads, old buildings, and laid back ambiance also makes for an idyllic setting. And what makes it even more interesting is that the city does have a population of wild cats. So if you happen to visit this charming European town, you might bump into Felicia putting a spell on the scheming General Rat using her majikaat powers!
