The Well Within: Unlocking Your Personal Power Through Radical Self-Care by Kalia Garrido is a gem of a read for anyone, especially those of us who are exhausted from everyday life. Today, we are bombarded with noise and information. Ironically, some of these even include ideas for self-care or slowing down; however, that in and of itself is more information to process. The book is succinctly divided into five lessons. In lesson 1, Truly Know Yourself, the reader is called home to examine what they’ve always known inside but which may have been shadowed by internal and external influences. The second and third lessons include watching what you take on and in and what you give out, gently nudging the reader to re-evaluate the forces around us and define what we truly need to give and receive for our bodies and minds. Lesson 4 covers treating yourself lovingly and is a refreshing change from the standard self-care banter, reminding us that only we know what we truly need. Our intuition is right there if we choose to listen. The last lesson pulls the other lessons together to remind anyone, especially women, what we are truly capable of when life is refocused.
The Well Within takes well-known and lesser-known concepts for finding our true selves and compiles them into a concise read, guiding us to turn our attention inward to help ourselves, those we love, and the world around us. With a simple layout of lessons, numerous “truth bombs” to force us to look inward, and straightforward suggestions to push us forward, Kalia Garrido pulls us into focus with loving, open-minded, and knowledgeable tips sent from a place of deep understanding. Writing from the heart, Garrido offers her own story of finding herself in tears, despite a seemingly perfect life, and feeling a relatable longing. Through her efforts to explore what matters in life and her learnings, the book makes us pause and work through the things we have known inside all along. I was especially pleased to discover that while reviewing this book, I was able to use the tools Garrido provided for my own growth.
