The Watchers by J.R. Poulter is about life through the eyes of two little rabbits, who watch life unfolding around them. They try to find out what is down by the water, what can be seen on the shore, what is in the bushes, what is in the farmyard, and what is at the farmhouse door? They hear fish whispering to other fish how the pond is thawing fast and the great birds are coming as the ice is thinning quickly. The frogs are also telling each other to hide from the birds as their splashing and croaking can be easily heard. The ducks are wary of the hunter and the fox who is looking for a meal. As the book progresses, children see all types of creatures, the hunters and the hunted, and how The One watches them all.
The author introduces children to different types of creatures, birds, and animals, and how life is for each one of them. She also raises awareness about the existence of God and reiterates the fact of how everyone is cared for and loved by The One who watches them all during all seasons. The illustrations are captivating and, along with the rhyming verses, they make the concept, awareness about the lives of the creatures around us, and the message loud and clear to young readers. I like the way the author showcases the animal kingdom, how they seek out their prey and how the prey try to be watchful of their predators. It is a good book to teach children values, ethics, and morals in classrooms and at home.
