How would you like to be a juror in a civil case? That’s the opportunity Lawrence Martin M.D. offers you in his book The Wall: Chronicle of a Scuba Trial. At first, it seems pretty clear-cut. Jennie Knowlton, a young scuba diver in a group of eight on a diving tour in Grand Cayman, fails to return to the boat. Her parents are suing the dive company, Ocean Realm International, and the dive captain Charlene Marvich for reckless negligence resulting in death. However, the defense team has a surprise up their sleeve that nobody sees coming. After the four days of the trial, you, the reader, will be asked which side you are on. What will you choose? Make your choice. Next, you’ll hear the verdict, and then you’ll learn what really happened.

I loved The Wall: Chronicle of a Scuba Trial! Chester Pearson for the plaintiffs and Richard Kirkland for the defense are seasoned attorneys. They’re slick and intelligent, and they know their way around a courtroom and how best to plead their cases to a jury. Judge Mabel Whittaker is very professional and makes savvy decisions about which objections to sustain and overrule. The author, Lawrence Martin M.D., even appears in the book as an expert witness for the defense. I knew nothing about scuba diving going in, but I feel relatively educated now, so that’s a bonus. This book is a page-turner; I found myself reading it well into the night as I couldn’t put it down. Lovers of courtroom dramas with a touch of mystery will enjoy this thriller as much as I did.
