The Visconti Devils is a paranormal romance novel written by Ria Dimitra. Maggie Pacelli was quite contented with her lot in life. A talented artist and author, she had set up a thriving creative business which she was able to conduct from the comfort of her own home. Maggie was fascinated with tarot cards and had co-authored a book on the subject with her best friend. She was currently designing the artwork for a new deck of tarot cards that would be a return to the style of the original Renaissance artwork. Maggie also loved the afternoons she was able to spend with Vanessa, her seven-year-old niece, who she picked up from school and watched until her mother was finished with work. So, it was with much eye-rolling, and not a little bit of sisterly suffering, that Maggie agreed to make the family’s signature tomato sauce for Fatima’s dinner party. And yes, she would attend, but she knew that Fatima was just trying to set her up with yet another unctuous professor or know-it-all attorney, and Maggie wasn’t interested. At least, she wasn’t until she set eyes on Dr. Michael LeClaire.

I was drawn to The Visconti Devils because of my interest in tarot cards and the fabulous artwork found in so many of these decks. Maggie, who had made her interest in the Renaissance and tarot cards the central piece of her lifework, seemed a kindred spirit. I shared with her the delight and awe when Dr. LeClaire reveals the existence of a newly acquired, nearly complete Visconti deck and loved being vicariously back on the Yale campus where he is the curator at the Beinecke. Ria Dimitra’s story is exciting and suspenseful. The romance between Maggie and Michael is sweet, intense and profound, and their trip to Italy to discover the mystery behind the missing devil cards makes for an irresistible adventure. Dimitra’s characters are authentic and believable, and her plot is first-rate. The Visconti Devils is highly recommended.
