The Urban Legion by Dave Agans is a satirical novel based in a world where every conspiracy theory is real. Lynn Grady is a food critic whose life turns upside-down when she involuntarily gets herself embroiled in the midst of a global conspiracy involving the truffle cartel, gun-waving French waiters, corporate espionage, and futuristic automobile tech. Lynn is approached by a man named Roger, who hires her to check the quality of his artificially farmed truffles. But she gets more than she bargained for as she quickly finds out that things are not as they seem, conspiracy theories are real, and the company that her teenage daughter works for is an evil conglomerate hell-bent on turning its employees into shop-addicted zombies. Adding to the chaos is Lynn's ex-husband Phil Grady, a narcissistic ex-grunge rocker who seems to be at the very heart of all this madness.
Dave Agans wastes no time in maneuvering the plot through the protagonist Lynn, creating a fast-paced narrative. The Urban Legion is action-packed from the beginning to the end. The characters are rich and colorful, and at times hilarious. The dialogue is crisp and to the point. But I found the most impressive part of the book to be Agans's meta-commentary. Agans's use of corporations doing everything humanly possible to get their customers hooked on their product like a drug addict has some very real-life echoes. My favorite parts of the book were the action scenes. They are written in an almost Tarantinoesque, unabashed, gleefully violent fashion. I cannot find a single thing that I did not enjoy about this book. I loved it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a fun, action-packed adventure with a dash of meta social commentary.
