The Unquiet Sea is a work of fiction in the psychological thriller sub-genre and was penned by author Frank Healy. Dubbed with the subtitle ‘A man at the beach remembers everything’, this chilling work is suitable for mature readers due to some uncomfortable scenes, such as one of attempted sexual assault. Our protagonist is George who, at 50, feels like he’s finally got his life in order. But when a hurricane arrives on the same day as a lawsuit at his psychology practice, George’s life comes apart at the seams. He must use his unusual gift for memory, a rare condition called hyperthymesia, to lift himself out of disaster and get his life back on track.
Filled with mysteries, intrigue, facts, secrets, and lies, this is a really compelling story that all psychological thriller fans are sure to enjoy. Author Frank Healy puts a lot of work into the character development of George, who is a largely likable everyman character at the start. The emotional arc and personal journey that he undergoes are quite incredible, though grounded in realism by the sometimes gritty atmosphere of the piece, and George’s own realistic reactions and outbursts to the situation. I loved the memory angle, a condition I’d never heard of before, and this detail-oriented feature of the narrative really forces readers to take a magnifying glass to the mystery too. Overall, this makes The Unquiet Sea a truly compelling read, and it comes highly recommended for fans who enjoy detailed mysteries and compelling thriller fiction.
