The Unbranded Student: Reclaiming Your College Search by Benjamin Roberts and Lee Brown is a powerful tool for students in their search for the right college. In this well-written and beautifully formatted book, the authors cut through the marketing garbage and offer readers the most important advice ever with elements to consider when doing their college search. It’s not about shopping for a brand, or the popularity, the social media hype garnered around an institution, or a family affiliation. It is about the candidate, the student, and what is special about that student. This book will help readers understand what a college can do and can’t do for them. This book is centered on one key idea — developing a college search criteria that focuses on who you are, your personality, learning styles, interests, goals, and ambitions, and not what the college expects you to be.
The authors weave personal history into the book and expose the myths about college selection while helping readers understand the poor advice that sells like hot cakes in the market. You don’t want to attend a school because it was the one attended by the last three generations of your family. No, you want to attend a college because it will be the place where you can really fit in. Benjamin Roberts and Lee Brown propose a winning strategy that will help any student find their best school using the Five W’s: “Who, What, When, Where, Why.”
After reading this book, I discovered why most of the choices I made when it was time for college were all wrong. I trusted the wrong people, went for the wrong reasons, ignored who I really was and what I wanted to be when making the choices, and so I committed many other errors that are clearly spelled out in this book. If I had read this book before attending college, my choices would have been hugely different. The Unbranded Student: Reclaiming Your College Search is written in a simple, conversational style that entertains and informs readers at the same time. An invaluable tool for college seekers.
