The Unborn Hero of Dragon Village by Ronesa Aveela is a fantasy adventure for middle-grade readers that involves dragons and many other types of magical creatures. The story centers around a twelve-year-old boy named Theo who stumbles into a world where an evil dragon named Lamia rules ruthlessly and has imprisoned many creatures and forced them to serve her without mercy. When Theo’s younger sister goes missing and he discovers that Lamia has taken her, he decides to do whatever it takes to find her and rescue her. The problem is, he’s just a young boy and he has no idea how he will face an all-powerful dragon. Along the way, Theo meets many colorful characters that join him on his quest and help him with their abilities and friendship.
I found The Unborn Hero of Dragon Village to be lots of fun as an adventure quest story. Theo’s journey of finding and killing Lamia is a complex one that takes the reader through many different settings, each with a very imaginative character, where all sorts of magical and exciting things take place. Every twist and turn takes us one step closer to the dramatic conclusion of the quest. I think the fast pace and creative storyline are perfect for younger readers with shorter attention spans. Even though the main character is a boy, I believe girls will get a kick out of this book as well, as there are just as many strong female characters as there are males. Readers of any age who like character-driven stories about an unlikely hero who goes on a journey in order to save everyone will enjoy this book.
I listened to the audiobook version of The Unborn Hero of Dragon Village. The narrator was Mark Sanderlin. He did an excellent job of giving each character their own voice. Mark's voice is on the softer side which made him perfect to read this book, the reason being that most of the characters are kids and Mark was able to sound like boy characters as well as girls with a slight change in his voice. He even handled the adult males with ease by making his voice a little deeper. The production quality of this audiobook is top-notch and easy on the ears.
