The Two Cinderellas: A Kess Tymons Mystery by CG McCauley is an action-packed crime thriller with a touch of romance. The story unfolds in September 1998 in Santa Monica, California. Police patrol officers Perez and West are called to investigate a possible break-in. On arrival at a slummy apartment block, they find the corpse of a black man on the stairwell with a shoe missing. Thinking the deceased was an intoxicated homeless man who fell, the police ruled it an accident. But the dead man's sister disagrees and hires Kess Tymons, an ex-police officer, to investigate. She tells Kess that her brother was not homeless and was not supposed to be where his body was found. What will Kess discover?
The Two Cinderellas by CG McCauley gripped me from the first page and kept me turning pages. I liked the action-packed suspense, the controversial and thought-provoking intrigue, and the unexpected climax. Other virtues of this captivating novel were the atmospheric scenery of Santa Monica, the story's romantic aspect, and Kess's highly relatable character. In addition, the story awed me with the unexpected interplay of the title—The Two Cinderellas—with the story’s climax. And most of all, I enjoyed pursuing my investigation alongside Kess because the author was honest and open with readers, giving out as many clues and details when Kess was unraveling them. I highly recommend this novel to crime fiction, suspense, and adventure fans.
