Have you ever heard of dog agility? Have you ever watched a dog complete a complex obstacle course at a high speed – with a handler in tow, of course? Have you ever been involved in the sport (and, yes, it is a sport)? Laurie Leach and Kelly Boyer’s The Truth About Agility has all the intel on this dog sport that took root in the UK in the 1970s. Since then, dog agility has become a very high-powered, positively energizing activity that is shared with dogs and dog owners in many countries. There are weave poles, tunnels, teeters, dog walks, A-frames, and, of course, the jumps, all laid out in an ingenious pattern, enough to confuse any handler, but the dogs usually demonstrate a good sense of what comes next, even if their handlers are still stumbling to keep up.
Laurie Leach and Kelly Boyer’s The Truth About Agility is a humorous and informative look at a dog sport that is sweeping (quite literally) the planet – one jump or obstacle at a time. Told with a fun flavor, a dash of humor, and a whole lot of agility dog input, the authors have combined their experiences as agility trainers, handlers, owners, observers (and more) to make some sense (or not) of this high-powered dog sport. Light-hearted and heart-warming, the stories and cartoons are engaging and entertaining, to say the least. They even discuss which breeds are best for the sport, although, in reality, all breeds are. They share their stories, with input from their dogs, from purebreds to rescues. This is a book that will capture the hearts of dog lovers, dog agility lovers, and readers who just want to put up their feet and enjoy a good chuckle or two. I loved it!
