I am shocked at the atrocities Henry Kissinger is accused of. But I am also not so naïve to think that similar things have not been done by other administrations that just haven’t come to light. The safety of the citizens of the United States lies in the hands of the President and the Secretary of State. Some of the decisions made to protect us would probably shock us. I had great respect for President Ford and yet according to Hitchens Ford agreed with the suggestions of Kissinger. Christopher Hitchens approaches his accusations strictly through a legal point of view. He avoids both moralizing and politicalizing. However, I cannot agree with certain aspects of Hitchens' accusations. When I look at the larger picture I have mixed feelings concerning Kissinger’s actions. It is too easy for citizens to look back with criticism when they were not present and privy to all meetings and information.
Henry Kissinger was the former Secretary of State and National Security Adviser during the Nixon and Ford Presidencies. Christopher Hitchens tells it as he sees it. Hitchens feels Kissinger should be prosecuted for war crimes. He accuses Kissinger of slaughter, homicide, and criminally meddling with government acts in multiple countries including the USA. Whether the reader agrees with Hitchens' accusations or not they have to admit that his book is well-written and researched. Being well-researched is different from knowing the point of view at the time the events were happening. Hitchens is both the author and the reader of the audio version of this book.
