Rayna left Willet Beach under a cloud of controversy but despite the popular saying that time heals all wounds, coming back to attend her father’s wedding was anything but healing. She remembered the details of the unfortunate accident as if it happened yesterday. Everyone else may believe it was an accident but Rayna thought that she may have had more to do with it than was apparent. Rayna had a unique gift that if not controlled could do more harm than good to the people around her. When bodies started appearing in her quiet community, Reyna feared that she had lost control once more. Unknown to her, a shadowy organization led by a man seeking redemption followed her every move in a bid to neutralize her before she does more damage, but appearances can be deceiving as Rayna was about to discover in Stephanie Black’s The Trespassers.
A family reunion degenerates into a murder mystery where everyone is a suspect in Stephanie Black's novel. Her cast of characters is impressive as is her opting to keep it simple by creating a story around familial relationships in a close-knit community. This elevates the tale from what I expected to be a mystery novel with a supernatural orientation into an account that is sufficiently grounded in the realities of the present times. Her subplots are well thought out as evidenced by the evolving relationship between Rayna and the mysterious Damon Hale. What I love about The Trespassers is the way Black uses her style of storytelling to change an unusual mystery into an immersive and exciting adventure that will push readers to their cognitive limits to solve the puzzles hidden within it. This is an absolute gem.
