The Treasure by Julien Ayotte features an intrepid hero involved in an adventure filled with suspense, drama, and romance. Sebastian Reynolds is a newspaper columnist who meets eighty-one-year-old retired U.S. Army officer Jerome Woodrow, who tells him of a lost treasure linked to the murder of his friend, Captain Cunningham. Woodrow received two boxes of maps and charts from Cunningham but included no personal letter. Reynolds, with a nose for news, begins to think that there is a good story here. With a crew of experts, Reynolds agrees to help Woodrow find the lost treasure containing stolen gold, silver, and jewels from a Spanish ship in the Pacific in 1820. Expect the hunt to be paved with danger, as they are not the only ones who know about the treasure's existence. Woodrow wants justice for his friend above all, while Reynolds will get far more than just a big story, as it will change his life and that of his wife, Ruth.
Treasure hunting has always been a great source for story ideas. Julien Ayotte sure knows how to use it by involving the characters in a series of exploits involving exotic locations, difficult antagonists, and an interesting romantic angle. I am surprised by how much I enjoyed reading The Treasure because Ayotte employs fascinating twists that make this story unique despite its familiar premise. As a hero, Sebastian Reynolds is a great piece of character work. I never worried for a bit that this is another one of those clichéd treasure hunting adventures because it does not just hurtle into perilous adventures; it also justifies the power of the will when going to any lengths to achieve a purpose. It is a lively caper that I strongly recommend if you are into an adventure story with a good dose of drama, suspense, and romance.
