Tess and her brother Toby had more than once viewed their mother wipe cobwebs and dust off of a little trunk in the basement. They even witnessed her once or twice peering in on the items. They themselves had never seen what was inside this mysterious trunk. Once day, curiosity got the better of them, and they began to explore the contents of the old trunk. Finding old postcards, a compass, and a tinted photograph dated 1890 within, little did they know the adventure one of those family heirloom items would be taking them on to discover the life of the woman and dog in the photograph. It was as if the photograph sprang to life. When they looked out the window, there she was; standing in the exact clothes, with her little dog, just like in the picture. How could this be? Were they imagining it all? Will they find the answers to what they are looking for or will the photograph that is fading away soon become non-existent?
The Tiny Portrait by Heidi Carla is a delightful children's book introducing and perhaps enhancing a young reader's interest in genealogy. The author has included beautiful illustrations and photography to go along with the story. By doing this, she has created a mental image in the mind of the reader and thus making the story more fun and comprehensible. The plot itself is brilliant. Children and adults alike most often love to think about the unimaginable, or impossible. Within the story, the characters think they physically see the woman in the photograph and begin to follow her. This aspect of the book lures readers to it because of its "unknown" elements. The book is very compact and small in size, allowing for any age reader to handle it with ease. The book's design, plot, and photographs are enjoyable, as well as intriguing, and just might make the reader want to dig into their own family's old photographs and history.
