The Threat Unseen by Matthew S. Cox is the 7th book in the Evergreen Series. Eighteen-year-old Harper Cody is slowly settling into her life at Evergreen with her sister, Madison. They are part of a healthy, functional community. After the nuclear bombs and EMP strike, most electronics are a thing of the past. Everyone does their part, from militia patrolling the area and looking after the younger ones to helping on the farm. Gangs are a reality. Idiots wanting to use innocent people just to get food to survive are a reality. Harper can deal with those. What she didn’t consider was that there are far greater dangers out there than machete-wielding madmen and that it is closer to their new home than she could ever have imagined.
Even though The Threat Unseen can be read as a stand-alone, it isn’t recommended. The previous books are vital to the entire story as well as the secondary characters and how they fit in. With a writing style that is easy to fall into and follow, Matthew S. Cox swept me away on a journey through a dystopian world that I didn’t want to leave. I adored the references to Mad Max and was curious whether it was Beyond the Thunderdome or Fury Road that dominated the main character’s imagination. Any story that has me laughing in between the serious scenarios is a winner! This story is filled with hope and love and a belief in humanity that cannot be denied. There is some swearing along with violent scenes that would make this story more suitable for young adults and adults alike.
