The Superhero’s Mask is a work of fiction in the drama genre and serves as the final installment in The Pandemic Series. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author Lisa Creech Saleh. The book follows the author's grief at the loss of her younger sister by continuing to write about the character Nana who has been the protagonist of the series. Nana enters a period of introspection as she reflects on different important moments in her life and considers the nature of time and its effects on a person and their experiences.
The Pandemic Series has always been a masterclass in introspection for readers, using the real world COVID-19 pandemic as a backdrop to show a normal but well-storied individual reflecting on the implications of their life because of the pandemic and the subsequent government response. Author Lisa Creech Saleh takes this introspective and meditative style a step further in this latest book, exploring a bereavement of her own through Nana’s last turn in the spotlight. Nana is perhaps one of the best protagonists for a story in this style, herself an individual with a great deal of life experience who has learned to take stock during her time in lockdown. The theme of the passage of time and its effect on how we regard memories is thoughtfully explored to its fullest. Overall, The Superhero’s Mask sets itself apart from the rest of the series through the palpable sense of emotional catharsis within its pages.
