If you enjoy a good murder mystery built on unexpected plot twists and a fascinating cast of characters, this one is for you. The Study of Silence: A Lady Evelyn Mystery is the third book in the series by Malia Zaidi. Set in England in the mid-1920s, it follows the adventures of twenty-five-year-old Lady Evelyn Carlisle, whose quiet life as a Classics student in a women’s college at Oxford is rudely interrupted when she finds one of her teachers murdered. Her boyfriend, who has been through this with her before, cautions her to remain at a distance. The tall, handsome police investigator warns her more than once to leave the case to them. Despite the warnings, Evelyn can’t help herself and becomes involved. Will she become a target of murder herself?
The Study of Silence is an engaging story with a complex plot that unfolds in flowing, descriptive narrative and well-constructed dialog. Told in the voice of Lady Evelyn, the story unveils the emotions and conflicts of the protagonist as she interacts with housemates, family members, loved ones, acquaintances, and strangers alike. The story is set against a fascinating period in English history when the roles of women were less confined than in previous generations. Lady Evelyn is a very likable, accomplished, intelligent and yet humanly flawed woman at an age in her life when several crossroads, both personal and professional, lie before her; that is, if she survives the murder investigation! An enjoyable and entertaining murder mystery that will inspire you to read the other books in the series.
