The Stream by A.R. Silverberry is, at first glance, a vivid and eventful fantasy novel. A story within a story, it focuses primarily on the life of Wend, a young boy who lives on a boat with his parents, travelling down the seemingly never-ending stream. One can never go back upstream, but only continue on the unknown path, so when Wend’s parents are taken from him, the young boy encounters all sorts of wonderful, dark and fearful people and places as his journey continues. What transpires is an inspirational conceptual novel where the stream is a metaphor for the path of one’s own life, full of twists, turns and unpredictability as to who and what we encounter as our own journeys unfold.
The Stream is a novel about life and the terrifying notion of never knowing what is coming around the next bend. It is also about keeping one’s faith and believing that life will deliver you the things you need, even when times look dismal and bleak. I was delighted by A.R. Silverberry’s tact in never specifying any religious connotations with the metaphor of the stream, which means that any reader with any kind of belief system is able to take away this book’s incredibly uplifting message. Wend’s story is heart-breaking, joyous, desperate and exciting, but it also gave me constant pause to assess the meaning of the stream itself and think about the twists and turns of my own life that have led me to where I am today. Masterful storytelling and a thought-provoking read.
