Eleven-year-old Peter has a tremendous surprise one night as his favorite toy, Monkey, comes to life and escapes with Peter out of the house in The Strange Adventures of Monkey and Peter: The Knights of the Black Heart by Nick Isles. Monkey is a special being that has been assigned to protect Peter from the forces of evil. When in toy form, Monkey can observe and hear things, and in his real body, he is a fierce fighter, determined to keep Peter safe. After they take the memory stick from Peter’s father’s computer, they leave the house, with Monkey running across rooftops and swinging through the trees to put plenty of distance between them and the Knights of the Black Heart.
Ordered by Damnatus, the leader of this group of soulless knights who have turned to worshiping the devil, these knights try to capture Peter because they think he has the key to opening the chest containing the devil’s heart. Together with his best friend, Charlotte, whose computer Peter and Monkey use to see what is on the memory stick, Peter fights against the evil that would threaten all of mankind. With Damnatus feeling that victory is close, he brings together all the forces of evil and confronts the forces of good, led by angels and all sorts of amazing creatures. Following an epic battle, it comes down to just the major players and the ultimate fight between good and evil.
The author has used great creativity and a unique twist to captivate young readers. Exciting and full of twists and turns, The Strange Adventures of Monkey and Peter: The Knights of the Black Heart by Nick Isles rivals other epic stories for children. With people and imaginative beings representing the best and worst in life, this is a story that clearly shows dedication to family and to a cause, demanding the most from children under difficult circumstances. With some descriptions and violence that may be too much for younger children, along with vocabulary and concepts that may be too advanced, this story is, however, great for middle schoolers and older readers and will hold their attention while they follow the characters through an incredible adventure.
