The Story of a Seed by Melva Ouliaris is a beautifully illustrated book for younger children to read and enjoy. The author (Ouliaris) and illustrator (Vincent Madaferri) have clearly put a lot of thought into this book and the message they want to convey to young minds. With a myriad of children's books on the market, this story is certainly unique and told in a way that has a distinctive and memorable edge.
The story takes readers on a journey from where a seed starts in its very beginnings, how it is nurtured, and its growth into a beautiful plant. The story is magically told in a way that will certainly provide an engaging and wondrous bedtime read. The portrayal of the seasons and the lifespan of a seed from its first inception, growth into a beautiful flower, and then decline will provide the perfect talking point for parents about life, nature, and the reality of Mother Nature's plans.
The illustrations themselves are colourful, intricate, and wonderfully imagined, and I particularly liked the humanistic interpretation of the seed and its growth, which brings the story to life. The illustrator Madaferri has creatively used water colours to make The Story of a Seed truly magical, bringing the entire story to life for its readers, and allowing young minds and their imaginations to roam free. The use of simple and short prose by writer Melva Ouliaris will help with early reading, word association, and makes for an easy read, which is perfect for an audience of around three to six years of age.
