One of the strongest points of The Starlight Club 9: Una Morte Facile (An Easy Death) by Joe Corso is the plot, which is so skillfully done that the reader can’t help but keep turning the pages and feeling for the characters, guessing what could happen next. The author knows how to build the tension by creating a dangerous setting and then throwing the characters into a conflict that can turn deadly at any moment.
Big Red Fortunato is very clear about it: he wants no drugs in Queens, and he issues strict orders to that effect. But his orders only fuel the greed of the Sicilian gang that starts trafficking more drugs than usual into Queens. Red is determined to stop them, but when he arranges a meeting with Antonio Andolino in Sicily, he doesn’t know that the drug lord has his secret plans. Andolino kidnaps his wife and his movie star prize fighter to hedge his bet. Can Red get them back unscathed or will they become collateral damage in a war against drugs?
This is the first book I have read by this author and it is hugely satisfying. The simplicity in language and the clarity of expression make for an enjoyable reading experience. The point of view comes out beautifully in the narrative and the heat builds up pretty quickly. The writing is confident and there is a striking balance and deftness in plot handling. The setting constitutes a powerful element to nurture the conflict. The Starlight Club 9: Una Morte Facile (An Easy Death) features compelling characters and even if there aren’t so many surprises plot wise, the story is handled in a way that grabs the reader’s attention and keeps it till the end.
