The Starfarer by Petra Landon is about two different people who come from culturally different planets. Their names are Sila and Zh’hir and they meet by chance when Sila is brought aboard Zh’hir’s space ship by accident. Terrified and alone, Sila calls out in her cell to the goddess her people worship. Zh’hir hears her calling out, as he can read thoughts, and goes to warn her to shield her thoughts, since she could be executed for not doing so. Sila is surprised to find out that she’s not alone, that there are other beings who can read thoughts. Zh’hir and Sila eventually form an unlikely friendship and become companions to each other through many trials. When a dark enemy threatens Sila, Zh’hir is by her side to help her uncover a secret that has been buried for centuries. But there is much at stake and only time will tell if the two will be able to follow their hearts or if history will repeat itself.
It's been a while since I've read a good science fiction novel. The idea of aliens who can read minds was unique and fascinating. One of the things that made this idea work well within the novel was the limitations placed on how much the two main characters could read minds. For example, it is illegal in the Ur’quay culture to read minds, which placed limitations on the ability and made the story more interesting. I enjoyed the romance as well; both Sila and Zh’hir are well developed characters that have flaws as well as strengths. I thought that these aspects of the story were well written. The novel is good, and I would recommend it to anyone who's in the mood for a good science fiction story with a well-developed romantic sub-plot. It kept me entertained and I would like to read it again in the future.
