The Spook Skelly Crew by TJ Ski is a charming tale of Halloween and a search for friends that ends in delight. Poor little Skelly woke up on Halloween night and found that he was quite lonely. So, he sets out to start a club of his very own and he knows just who to recruit. The most obvious place to start is with Count Dracula, but the famous vampire has no interest in Skelly’s club. Though he’s rejected, poor little Skelly doesn’t give up, so he asks the next monster he knows but once again he’s turned down. It seems as if no one wants to be his friend, but he’s soon to learn that the most important lesson is that we’re all skeletons within.
TJ Ski brings to life a unique story that fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas will immediately fall in love with and is the perfect treat for Halloween, though the sweet message it presents is great for any time of the year. The writing has a rhyme scheme that children will find humorous and fun, paired with lovely black and white images that capture Skelly and his attempts at getting friends. The stunning images showcase a perfect eye for detail, creativity, and originality. Skelly maybe a skeleton, but he’s also easy to relate to in his quest for friendship and his struggle with loneliness.
The story is playful and humorous with Skelly even including tips for keeping young readers' skeletons strong, paired with the most delightful image of Skelly drinking milk to avoid growing frail. TJ Ski uses a Halloween theme to tell a story about acceptance and friendship which teaches children to look beneath the surface. The Spook Skelly Crew is a delightful and original story that is engaging and fun, charming and sweet, with a humorous style, lovely monsters, a message about friendship, and plenty of Halloween.
