The Sound of the Broken Wand is a collection of poetry in the inspirational and emancipatory subgenre. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by poet Tiki Black, who is also a singer and songwriter. Lending her lyricism to this collection of highly emotive verses, Tiki writes this work to accompany her sophomore album. The themes include breaking away to achieve freedom, survival, creative growth, and individuality. The poems, and one very insightful personal essay, take us through six key themes to represent the oppositions and tensions between topics such as life and death, reflection and deflection, the power of magic, and much more.
I am a huge fan of poetry and enjoy it in many different forms, from many different perspectives, and I have to say that author Tiki Black has some of the finest writing qualities that I’ve read in a long while. There is an innate rhythm to the work which inspires melodies in readers’ minds, whether they’ve experienced her music or not, allowing the words to flow and create waves of emotion with every line. For me personally, the section on the theme of The Cage was particularly pertinent, and I closely related to the sense of feeling trapped, and the pressure of being held captive by the ties that bind us in everyday life. There is much darkness in the work, but it is perfectly balanced with joy, spirit, and magic, which gives the collection its ethereal and highly uplifting tone overall. The Sound of the Broken Wand is a collection that poetry fans the world over will certainly treasure.
