Mary Fisher has led a hard life. Trying to eke out a living from the lowest rung of the social ladder in late 1800s Scotland is no cakewalk. Reminiscing on her torturous early life, she gives a vivid recollection of her experiences, the pain, the anger, and the rare compassion that made her grow up far too quickly.
T.A. Peters' The Sisters Find a New Home: The Green Flourish Pentalogy Part 1 is a coming of age story set in a time and place where a hard life forces children to become adults just to survive. I cannot even begin to comprehend the amount of scholarly research the author had to undertake just to get the historical setting right. Though it may be initially jarring, the focus on using the right words used during Mary's era adds more flavor to her rich story. Reading the dialogue and interplay between various characters has never been so interesting. The use of the first-person narrative is something that fits the concept of this novel. Seeing through Mary's eyes, reading her thoughts on how she views the world, and how she reacts to the travails she encounters gave much more emotional weight to the narrative.
An immersive, fascinating and educational read, The Sisters Find a New Home: The Green Flourish Pentalogy Part 1 is that rare novel that made my interest grow with each page I turned. This book exceeds the confines of its relatively narrow niche and can offer so much to the intrepid reader willing to step out of his or her literary comfort zone.
