The Silent T by Anitha Rathod is the story of a young girl named Julia and her journey through daily tasks that require her to be successful at new and sometimes challenging experiences. The reader follows Julia, a toddler-age girl, throughout learning how to walk, trying new foods, and learning how to swim. Along the way she is friends with the letters that make up the words “I CAN’T”. These letters are companions during her experiences and the joys and frustrations that result. Throughout the story, Julia struggles with not being able to complete many activities and realizes that she needs to decide her own ability or inability to be successful. She begins to take note of the letters in these words and the effect their presence has on her success. As Julia works through her own areas of disappointment and successes, she learns the value of believing in herself to accomplish great things.
The Silent T by Anitha Rathod is a heartwarming story about the path every young child takes in their attempt to try new things. The concept is delightful with cute and beautiful illustrations and the author does a great job of interweaving the difficulty between feeling unable to do something and the ability to complete something with pride. The illustrations are charming and draw the reader in with bright colors and cute, whimsical expressions. She even made the letters in the story take on human-like characteristics. This is a wonderful book for any young child who is struggling with believing they cannot do something. Deep inside each of us is the ability to make that letter T silent and believe that we certainly CAN!!
