The Sigil Masters: A Coming of Age Epic Fantasy by Rick Duffy is a compelling young adult fantasy with memorable characters. It features a magical world that will literally absorb readers. Par lives in a world where magic thrives and almost everyone uses it. Those who are not gifted with magic are looked down upon and treated as outcasts, so Par and his best friend Enio must fake it to survive. When they are almost caught, they are left with only one option: flee. They set out on a journey to find a wizard who might help, encountering all sorts of dangers from beasts to a dangerous person who will stop at nothing to capture Par. The young boy actually has hidden gifts that are revealed as the adventure moves forward. Can he and his friend survive long enough to get the help they need from a wizard master?
This is a great story and I enjoyed the way the author writes about magic, friendship, and adventure. The world-building is impeccably accomplished and readers have a clear picture of the place and how the society functions. I enjoyed the irony in the writing. Par thinks he is cursed, but in reality, he possesses gifts that wicked people will do anything to have. The protagonist grows steadily through the story, uncovering his hidden gifts and discovering who he really is as he faces dangerous situations. The theme of friendship dominates the narrative and the author’s ingenuity in writing realism into the story shines through this tale. The Sigil Masters: A Coming of Age Epic Fantasy is well-plotted, beautifully paced, and filled with action. Rick Duffy’s beautiful prose and skillful handling of character development make this story a fascinating, spellbinding tale.
