The Sibling Connection: How Siblings Shape Our Lives is a non-fiction book about relationships written by Jane Mersky Leder. While there may be competition and disagreements between siblings as they are growing up, the relationship between them is a dynamic process that continues to evolve through childhood, puberty, young adulthood and later on through to senior status. The author examines each of these stages through a series of interviews with siblings of varying ages. She also discusses her own sibling status as the elder of four children and the tension generated when their parents passed away. Leder examines both fraternal and identical twins and the special connections identical twins frequently possess, and she dispels some of the myths and predictions made about only children.
Jane Mersky Leder's non-fiction book about relationships, The Sibling Connection: How Siblings Shape Our Lives, is an intriguing and original look at what the author calls the longest-lasting family relationships most people ever have. I was impressed by the depth of her research into the subject and enjoyed reading the quotes of the various siblings she interviewed for her book. The chapter on twins was especially of interest to me as I grew up or worked with several sets of identical twins, and many of her findings confirmed what I saw in my relationships with those twins. The Sibling Connection: How Siblings Shape Our Lives is an honest, provocative and well-presented look into family relationships, including the author's own. It's recommended for anyone interested in understanding more about family functioning and sibling dynamics.
