The Showdown at San Benito by Roy Calvin Moore mixes raw grit, suspense, and romance into an unforgettable western. John Welder and Max Stone are released from the Confederate Army after General Lee surrenders. With nothing left to call home, these men head to Texas to build a thriving business. John Welder starts a new business that will make shipping beef to the east more cost-efficient. Max oversees John’s other enterprise, a cattle ranch where he has his wife and son. Everything John touches seems to turn to gold, but the west is wild and unpredictable. John may have it all, but does he really? Time will tell as his family lives during an era when mistakes are rarely forgiven and it seldom forgets.

I found Roy Calvin Moore’s first novel, The Showdown at San Benito, complex as the story covers the lives of a few characters until they collide. The characters are well-developed, though they become as unpredictable as this wild land. I loved how a slight turn of events changed the direction of the story. I had to pay close attention as the action in the book was fast and the characters changed their outlook on people. Through an intricate weaving of characters, events, and fierce situations, Moore constructs an appealing story that will keep you glued to the pages. The dramatic ending will not disappoint the reader. Overall, I was pleased with this novel. I read it in one sitting, but I couldn’t put it down anyway.
