The Shadows is a science-fiction novel by Jordan Acker, set in a distant future version of the universe. The plot focuses on a universe that is post-conflict, after a corrupt force known as the Balithian government had faced defeat in the battle to destroy the descendants of Earth. Years after the conflict is supposedly over, the deadly assassin Red Blaze targets a key figure, the King of Helios, and reopens old wounds of the war. With an assassin on the loose and very little clue as to who sent him, the Illumenal system gathers a crack team of incredible agents from the farthest reaches of the universe to track him down.
Part Star Wars, part X-Men, and all thrilling and enjoyable, The Shadows will make an excellent read for fans of science fiction and fantasy everywhere. This short novel packs a great deal of punch in terms of interesting backstory, action, heroes and villains. There are a lot of different characters to contend with (my favourite was Marine), but the story sets each one up nicely for future books, and will certainly leave you wanting to know more about how this crack team of agents developed their skills. Jordan Acker builds a confident and believable universe in which to set the story, with plenty of political overtones and galactic history to delve into. Overall, however, The Shadows is a story of emerging heroes who have yet to face their worst foes, and it promises to be an exciting start to a fascinating series.
