The Shadow War by Steven Cortinas is the story of a group of genetically enhanced teens who are helping to change the world in 1969. Among them is Erin Escalante, who has been working as an assassin, but now she wants to do something more worthwhile. The story starts with her mother, Diana, who is also an assassin and takes part in a secret project, one in which Erin is born outside a human body. She is the first of her kind, but Diana wants her to have a good life. Unfortunately, Erin is trained to kill too and that is all she knows. She isn't the only one. Her team feels the same way and they soon work together to change their lives for the better.
Steven Cortinas has written an interesting story with The Shadow War: The Legacy Series. When it begins, it moves quickly with short chapters, almost like snapshots into these characters' lives, but it keeps you reading as you want to find out more. Erin is forced to fight and kill, but she soon becomes disillusioned by it all. She is supposed to follow orders and not think about what she has done or have feelings about it. Obviously the more she experiences the world, the less she is able to do this. The characters are well written and I enjoyed reading this book. I think The Shadow War would appeal to fans of sci-fi and spy stories. It has a little bit of an Umbrella Academy vibe to it too. I would recommend it.
