Finding yourself in a whole new world would be a dream come true for most kids, particularly with the promise of adventure and missing school. Elizabeth Harding, however, would much rather stay at home or in the library. It’s hard enough dealing with the not-quite-there memories of what happened a year ago and the nightmares that plague her every night now. She simply hasn’t the time for a wild romp through enemy territory while discovering a part of herself she’s never really known existed. Rich with exciting skirmishes, amusing sounds, and descriptors younger readers will especially enjoy, Stephen Rivers’ The Shadow Breaker is a can’t-miss novel perfect for any age.

Elizabeth Harding, like many children, possesses a wonderfully fantastical mindset. Orrica, seen through her eyes, gives a tantalizingly precise picture of this other world that highlights her imaginatively analytical mind further. Aside from the cast of charming characters, there is a sort of music to Rivers’ work that struck me. All throughout The Shadow Breaker are moments of cleverly orchestrated humor, something of a wink and a nod to the silliness in the world Rivers has created. Sound is important in The Shadow Breaker. The sounds he uses animate Rivers’ world with a unique life that belongs solely to them. Orrica is a beautiful place, idyllic at its best and darkly despairing at its worst. But even when there seems to be no hope, Rivers pulls the reader back from the brink. The Shadow Breaker is the story of an extraordinary girl finding the depth of her potential in another world and bringing that sense of self back home with her.
