When I was attending N.C. State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, I lived off campus and would drive by an orphanage each morning on my way to classes. It was such an imposing place, stone walls and beautiful buildings, and landscaping that changed with the seasons. The image has stayed with me for years, and the F.I.G.s, a constant disruption on the orphanage campus of Wood Rose. are the result of that memory.

The Seraphim's Song is the fifth book of The F.I.G. Mysteries series by Barbara Casey. At a remote archaeological site in China, a young man named Milosh - molded by darkness - steals an ancient artifact, unleashing an evil dust storm turned hurricane that threatens to destroy everything in its path. Meanwhile, the Females of Intellectual Genius (F.I.G.) under the mentorship of Carolina Lovel found a permanent home in the Wood Rose Orphanage and Academy for Young Women. When Carolina's mother, Lyuba, warns Miss Alcot about the threat posed by Milosh to Carolina and the young girls, the F.I.G.s must travel to the forbidden cave in the Yellow Sea - an old sanctuary for ancient gypsies - and restore the key to its rightful place. If they fail, the world itself will fall into utter chaos.
Filled with ancient lore, myth, and magic, The Seraphim's Song is a treat for fantasy lovers. Barbara Casey weaves a captivating yarn involving mysterious gypsies, teenagers with unique abilities, and magical portals that keep your eyes glued to the pages from start to finish. The plot is well-paced, moving along unexpected paths you never see coming. Each character has a well-thought-out arc and distinct personality that make them thoroughly compelling to read. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Carolina and the F.I.G.s. You get the sense of a broader narrative to the story, and it makes it feel all the more epic. I enjoyed the book immensely and highly recommend it to young adult fantasy lovers.
