The Self-Sufficient Teen and Young Adult: Skills for Living on Your Own, by Valli L. Quaintance is the ultimate guide for teens and young adults to make it in the real world. This compact book is packed with valuable, accessible advice that you can start using today. The table of contents outlines the topics in each chapter, and they are well-organized. Readers will gain crucial knowledge in life skills, from communication to job-hunting to choosing a college and saving money. There is something for every young person in this book, and it's a resource that would make a great graduation gift, or to a teenager who seems to be stuck in life and needs help navigating it.
Quaintance has an easy, accessible style that young adult readers will relate to, and you don't feel bogged down by the wealth of information. The chapters flow smoothly together into one cohesive guidebook-one that readers can turn to again and again. As a former social worker, I see the value in this pocket-size self-help resource and appreciate that the author doesn't talk down to its younger, perhaps less experienced audience. One of my favorite parts is organization and how it can make life easier if you just think about how to make lists for your day, your time, and your goals.
Even though this book is aimed at young people, older people can benefit as well. There are things a lot of teenagers don't think about, but can learn like cooking, loading and unloading a dishwasher, budgeting, and opening a checking or savings account. This book teaches those skills and more. If you're looking for a book that can help prepare you or someone you know for life in the real world, make sure The Self-Sufficient Teen and Young Adult by Valli L. Quaintance is at the top of your list.
