Joseph P. Cook holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Colorado. He is also a Registered Respiratory Therapist with over twenty years of clinical and didactic teaching experience in the medical field. He recently retired from GE Healthcare as a Clinical Education Specialist in anesthesia delivery and monitoring. He now volunteers his time with the Miami-Dade Medical Reserve Corps. Marie and Joe are part of a Secret Club. Only special people can belong to this club and they must all want to have adventures that teach them something new and exciting. They had already enjoyed a trip to the zoo where they learned about animals. This time they wanted to go the art museum. They presented their plan to the parents who readily agreed, and then they saved their money until they had enough to visit the art museum. Marie and Joe’s mother agreed to accompany the children and they set off on their adventure. A tour guide took them around the art museum and the children learned how art evolved from cave art, through the realism of the Renaissance, to the abstract art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was a grand adventure and the children learned a lot about art and all the different ways to visually express what they see in the world around them.
J.P. Cook’s picture book story, The Secret Club Visits the Art Museum, is another Secret Club adventure in learning. With colorful illustrations by M.P. Fonseca, the story follows the Secret Club members as they learn about art. The story leads young readers through various time periods in history and the styles of art that represent these eras. Each new period in art is well described in simple language so that young readers can understand some of the concepts being presented in these art works and learn something about the artists as well. This is a wonderful book to introduce young readers to the beauty of creativity and the wonder of art.
