The Sands of Saladin by J A M Nolla recounts the Battle of Crete in 1941 when the Middle East is burning fiercely. Nazi Germany launches an airborne invasion of Crete under the code name Operation Mercury, a strategy and tactic authorized by Adolf Hitler himself. Meanwhile, Iran and Iraq claim independence from British interference. The two nations want a total absence of subjection to foreign domination. The German paratroopers are sent to support the Iraqis but they suffer heavy casualties. This is the story of a small group of paratroopers who build their own airborne formations. This is also the story of the British heroes who fight them.
J A M Nolla provides us an interesting and tragic historical novel set during the World War II on the Greek island of Crete. The Sands of Saladin is a gripping story of the German paratroopers and the British who face them during this war that is now considered as one of the most unforgettable battles in world history. When I got a copy of this book and realized that this is another war story, I asked myself: Would this hold my interest? I must say that this is absolutely one of the war stories that made a strong impression on me. After I finished reading this book, I paused for a long time, thinking about the men in the story. How haunting and heartbreaking! A completely unique experience that is so authentic, so moving, and so intense! You will never see the Battle of Crete or any related battle in the same way again.
