The Saga of the Phoenix by Oriano Galvanini is the first entry in a series, a tale of sea adventure and the birth of a new civilization. Giorgio Relli has just assumed the role of the radio operator, receiving radio communications for the steamship named Bayhorse, when a mysterious Russian contact expresses the desire to meet. Although the young man is hesitant, curiosity gets the better of him. He quickly finds himself picking an object from the ship’s pharmacy and delivering it to a destination in the US. After that, he is tasked by its recipient to run a similar mission for Bombay, India. In India, he gains more insight into the mysterious assignments. He finds himself embroiled with a company that has substantial financial resources and advanced technology. As the company’s trust in him grows, he discovers an underground world - the base of Phoenix - in a desert in the USA. Phoenix is an organization with the technology to change the world and the way of life of people on the planet. They entrust a mission to the protagonist, one that is crucial. The big question is: Will he live to see the revolution ignited by this clandestine yet powerful organization come to fruition?
The Saga of the Phoenix is a well-written story filled with terrific descriptions. The adventure is plentiful, both on land and at sea. The author offers strong images from the beginning of the story. It is interesting to follow Giorgio as he learns his trade, getting himself acquainted with the new role. Readers will be thrilled at how the Russian deals with the protagonist, offering just essential pieces of information and arousing his curiosity without betraying any confidences. The international setting takes readers across different countries and continents and across often troubled seas. Oriano Galvanini’s writing is hugely descriptive, filled with spellbinding imagery and intense moments of adventure. It is a tale about change and innovation, filled with both realism and humanity. The Saga of the Phoenix is deftly plotted, balanced, and utterly entertaining.
