The Retreat by Kelly St. Clare is an action packed sci-fi adventure that takes place in the post global warming disaster. Earth's population was no more. Four thousand genetically cultured humans were launched into space on the station Orbitos. They were to begin recolonization when Earth was ready. That is until they were forced to become soldiers to protect Earth from an alien race know as the Critamal. The story begins with a group known as Knot 27; a closely knit unit of five individuals that were considered to be the lowest of the low as far as duties went. During a routine clean up mission of space debris left over from a battle, they find themselves face to face with the enemy's mother ship. Romy, short for Rosemary, is the pilot. Flying by the seat of her pants, she somehow ends up destroying the enemy's mother ship. Just as they are congratulated and are about to dock, something goes wrong and then, while it is drifting, the ship plummets towards Earth and is torn in two as it enters the atmosphere...
Ms. St. Clare does a wonderful job of bringing out the human side of Knot 27's quirky crew of misfits both before and after they reach Earth. The author incorporates a cast of well developed characters, from villains to unlikely heroes, in a world where rules are strictly enforced. Amidst all the chaos of reuniting the group, wondering who they can and can't trust, our author adds a twist to complicate matters even more. Raging hormones and puberty at age 24? The Retreat is the first book of The After Trilogy. It is superbly written and very hard to put down. I can't wait for part 2. Brava!
