The Restoration is an Amish Christian novel written by Wanda E. Brunstetter. Iva is concerned about her daughter’s future. Priscilla’s extended courtship with Elam has not resulted in the proposal of marriage Iva and her daughter had been waiting anxiously for. It’s been difficult for Priscilla to see her girlfriends all getting married and starting families, and she’s beginning to wonder why Elam hasn’t even mentioned their future together. Iva is particularly worried that Priscilla might start harboring romantic feelings about the young couple’s English friend, David. David’s been away at college for the last few years, but when he appears at his grandparents’ house in Arthur, with the announcement that he is leaving school and considering converting to the Amish faith, Iva’s worries seem well-founded. She wishes Elam would finally propose to her daughter before things get even more complicated. While Iva doesn’t want to interfere in her daughter’s affairs, she’s frightened that David may persuade Priscilla to leave the Amish faith and her family behind.
Wanda E. Brunstetter’s Amish Christian novel, The Restoration, is a heartwarming and compelling story set in the Amish community in the small town of Arthur, Illinois. I quickly became involved in the stories surrounding Priscilla and her friends, Elaine and Leah, and sympathized with the plight of Cora, whose youthful drive to become a nurse left her without her family and shunned by the Amish community she had grown up in. The author’s long-standing familiarity with Amish culture is quite evident in this charming story that makes the reader feel personally in tune with the traditions and lifestyle of the Amish. I was particularly interested to learn about the use of herbal and alternative medicines by the Amish, especially the reflexology that Leah practices. This family saga is also set during Christmas which adds an extra dimension to the story and enhances the reader’s experience of Amish culture and traditions. The Restoration is most highly recommended.
