The Resilient: Resisting Urban Dystopia is a young adult war novel by author Braedan Lalor and the second book of its series. The novels are set in a world where teenagers survive purely by being the fittest, the most ruthless, and the luckiest amid a war zone where all the odds are constantly stacked against them. Alastar and Sophia, fresh from the trials of the first novel, return to a brand-new struggle as a secret sect brings peculiar dark powers to the war, and Alastar is affected. Sophia and her fellow sensitive, Demsie, know that something is wrong, but solving the problem requires all of their unique espionage and soldiering skill sets.
Braedan Lalor does a wonderful job of creating three central characters with deeply unsettling emotional problems, quite understandable when we’re given the context of their brutal upbringings. I believe young adult readers would connect and relate to Sophia in particular, whose bravery shines through in a very different way to the rest of the cast. For me, the deep focus given to character is not reflected in the world around them, which I felt was under-developed despite its vivid description. The Resilient: Resisting Urban Dystopia is a well-written and fast-paced novel with plenty of exciting twists and turns, so if you’re not seeking a deeper meaning as to why this world exists in the first place, you’re bound to enjoy being rocketed along for the ride. I’d recommend it for readers of light spy and action novels who enjoy a character-driven experience.
