Dr. Han Shi wants to undo the decades-long hostility the West has shown to the motherland and put China back in its rightful position as a world powerhouse that everyone should fear especially Americans. He wants to use a little-known COVID-19 virus mutation to carry out his plan. However, there is a catch: he needs help to create a viable counteragent for his weapon. Chen Chu is among the few who have survived the enigmatic epidemic that recently ravaged China's Wulajie village. His life work has been to figure out how he survived such a deadly virus. The fate of the eight billion people on the planet is at stake in Barry Libin's The Red Mutation. Unforeseen events set these two strong-willed men are on a collision course.
In Barry Libin's medical thriller, ambition turns into a lethal motivator. Drawing inspiration from the COVID-19 pandemic, this terrifyingly realistic end-of-the-world scenario will chill readers to the bone. The characters' easy-to-understand dialogue and how their origin stories weave into the plot will captivate the reader and engross them in this gripping tale. The different subplots blend so fluidly that it is nearly impossible to distinguish the transition between an exciting turning point in Thanatos' evolution and the daggers-drawn grandstanding at the Communist Party Congress. A brilliant move by Libin is the cast of characters he introduces at the beginning, which allows the reader to immerse themselves rapidly in this fast-paced adventure. What I find most compelling about this book is the meticulous attention to detail in describing the virus's evolution and the efforts involved in getting a viable vaccine onto the market. The Red Mutation checks all the boxes for an exciting read, complete with its fair share of shady gangsters and an Oscar-worthy spin doctor. Libin has outdone himself with this novel.
