The Reapers is the first book in the paranormal series, The Hunted, written by Ali Winters. Nivian is a Silencer amongst the Reapers. Well respected, she has a perfect track record, but that changes the day she is pitted against a Hunter named Kain. Unlike other humans, who can only see Nivian as she is reaping their souls, Kain can clearly see Nivian and vows to learn all about her. Nivian slowly gets to know Kain – a concept which is foreign to her, because she only lets her marks see her as she is collecting their souls. It doesn’t help matters that Kain is unaware of his Hunter status, or that Nivian has been instructed to destroy Kain. As his Hunter powers awaken, will Kain be able to destroy the woman who has consumed his thoughts so completely? Only Nivian holds the key to their fate, as she is not only the most powerful Reaper to exist, but is also drawn to Kain for all of the wrong reasons.
Ali Winters’ first book in The Hunted series drew me in from the get go. Living each day and night for just one purpose, Nivian is pulled out of her ritualistic life by a human who not only notices her, but is determined to get to know her better. I found so many parts of Nivian’s and Kain’s tale utterly hilarious, in that Nivian has never personally interacted with humans on a basic level, except when she is reaping their soul prior to death. She takes everything Kain says literally, causing many misunderstandings which are just too funny for words. When things get serious between them, they are suddenly called on to destroy each other, regardless of Kain’s non-existent threat. I was truly enamored at Kain’s ability to lure Nivian into his world of charm and romance, but not knowing whether they would choose to go against the grain and pursue an unprecedented love is what kept me going to the very end. I very much enjoyed Ali Winters’ paranormal tale, and recommend The Reapers to fans of the paranormal, who love a hearty dose of suspense, action and romance packed into their love-hate-love stories.
